Strengths-Based Learning Manual

This manual introduces teachers to Strength-Based Learning (SBL), a teaching approach that empowers students to take ownership of their learning by using their individual strengths. Instead of focusing on deficits or gaps, SBL encourages learners to build on what they already know and can do. It provides a practical framework for designing lessons that allow students to make choices, work collaboratively, and develop higher-order skills through self-directed learning.

The manual explains the theoretical foundations of SBL—such as metacognition, self-regulation, creativity, and the development of higher-order skills—and shows how learning becomes a democratic process when students co-construct their own learning paths. Teachers shift from being the controller of learning to being a coach who facilitates learning and helps students reflect, plan, and evaluate their progress.

It also includes step-by-step guidance on preparing and coaching SBL lessons, using the “What – How – Help/Feedback” lesson structure, applying SBL evaluation methods (including OICO rubrics and growth-mindset principles), and organizing effective group work. Concrete examples, such as the Antigone lesson, illustrate how SBL can be applied across subjects and educational contexts.

Overall, the manual is designed to support teachers and schools in creating motivating, inclusive, and strength-focused learning environments that improve student wellbeing, foster deeper learning, and promote democratic competences.
